Nestled at the foot of Mount Morrone, just outside Sulmona, the Abbey of Santo Spirito is one of the most important monastic complexes in Abruzzo and Central Italy. Founded in the 13th century by Pietro da Morrone, who later became Pope Celestine V, this abbey is both an architectural gem and a place rich in history, spirituality, and culture.
A sacred place tied to Celestine V
The abbey’s origins date back to 1254, when Pietro Angelerio — later Celestine V — chose the Morrone area for his hermitic life. In this quiet, natural valley, he founded a monastic congregation that became one of the spiritual centers of medieval Italy. The current structure was expanded between the 15th and 18th centuries, growing into a vital hub for the Celestine order.
Celestine V’s brief papacy in 1294 and his resignation from the papal throne remain deeply connected to the abbey’s identity, which preserves much of his spiritual legacy.
Architecture and art
The Abbey of Santo Spirito al Morrone features a harmonious blend of Renaissance and Baroque styles. The complex includes:
- The main church, with its elegant facade and richly decorated baroque interiors
- A monumental cloister, adorned with stone columns and 17th-century frescoes
- The historic library, refectory, and monks’ cells
- The “Holy Staircase”, symbolizing spiritual ascent
- The National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo – Sulmona location, housed within the restored abbey complex
After centuries of use, suppression, and abandonment, the abbey was restored and now serves as both a cultural center and museum.
A place to experience and discover
The abbey is open to visitors and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, guided tours, and cultural events. The Archaeological Museum showcases artifacts from the Bronze Age through the Roman period, telling the rich story of inland Abruzzo.
Located within the Majella Natural Reserve, the abbey also serves as a starting point for hiking and cultural routes, including the Celestine Way — a journey of faith and nature.
