Monte Grappa Stairway: the historic path connecting Giulianova Lido and Giulianova Alta

In the heart of Giulianova, the Monte Grappa Stairway (Salita del Montegrappa) is one of the most scenic ways to reach the Renaissance hilltown. Once known as via delle Fontanelle, this pedestrian path links the seaside promenade to Giulianova Alta, offering breathtaking views over the Adriatic Sea.

Origin and curiosities

The old name recalls the springs and washhouses that once marked the daily life of Giulianova. Along the way stands the Old Public Washhouse, a symbol of the town’s water culture, restored in 1998 by architect Luciano Secone with arches recalling Roman aqueducts.

Beneath the hill stretches a network of water-captation tunnels, partly natural and partly man-made, highlighting the area’s long-standing hydraulic vocation.

What to see along the stairway

Walking up Monte Grappa Stairway means enjoying both history and landscapes:

🚶 Walk through nature and stone: the path winds through pine trees and ancient walls, reaching Porta Marina, once a main gateway to the Renaissance town, now no longer in existence.
💧 Old Washhouse (Fontanelle): a restored landmark blending memory and architecture.
📷 Scenic views: panoramic glimpses of the Adriatic pen up along the way.

Best time to visit

The stairway is accessible year-round:

🌸 Spring: flowers brighten the path.
☀️ Summer: a shaded, cool connection between beach and hilltown.
🍂 Autumn: warm foliage colors enhance the landscape.
❄️ Winter: quiet charm with clear sea views.

How to get there

🚶 On foot: the stairway starts from the Lido area and leads directly to Giulianova Alta in just a few minutes.
🚗 By car: the town is also accessible via driveways, but the stairway is the most authentic way.

Why visit it

The Monte Grappa Stairway is more than a route: it’s a symbolic bridge between sea and history, nature and architecture, past and future. A perfect experience for those who love slow travel and authentic details.
