In the northern heart of Abruzzo, nestled between the Monti Gemelli within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, lies the spectacular Salinello Gorges. Carved by the Salinello stream over thousands of years, this canyon offers a breathtaking landscape of towering limestone cliffs, seasonal waterfalls and caves inhabited since prehistoric times. It is a place where geology, spirituality and legend come together, making it one of the most fascinating destinations for trekking, culture and timeless silence.
A stone corridor filled with history and spirituality
The Salinello Gorges are not only a natural masterpiece but also a living archive of history.
Hidden among the rock walls are caves and hermitages, such as the Grotta di Sant’Angelo, transformed into a place of worship in the Lombard era and still visitable today. Above the canyon, the ruins of Castel Manfrino (13th century) dominate the valley, recalling the Swabian and Angevin conflicts that shaped medieval Abruzzo.
Hiking trails and access
The canyon can be reached from two main entrances:
- Ripe di Civitella (Civitella del Tronto): a path following the stream through woods and narrow passages.
- Macchia da Sole (Valle Castellana): a route leading first to Castel Manfrino, then descending into the gorge, offering panoramic views of the Monti Gemelli.
The trails are rated E (Escursionistico – for hikers), requiring basic fitness, hiking shoes and caution, especially after rainfall when the water flow may rise.
Landscapes and highlights
Exploring the Gorges means walking through a landscape in constant transformation.
Don’t miss:
- Narrow gorges and rock formations carved by water over centuries.
- Seasonal waterfalls enhancing the scenery.
- The “Devil’s Arch”, a rocky passage steeped in legend.

Nature and sustainable tourism
Located inside the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, the Salinello Gorges are today one of the symbols of eco-tourism in Abruzzo. Guided tours, family-friendly hikes and environmental education activities are organized in the warmer months.
